Merchants Alliance

independent retailers building a better food system

Fifty percent of Americans’ food dollars are spent in grocery stores, yet few people think about the important role merchants play in building healthy food systems. With a rapidly evolving and consolidating retail landscape, it is imperative that grocers committed to stocking truly good food come together to support each other and the communities they serve.

Members of the Good Food Merchants Alliance at all levels – Supporter, Sustainer, and Collaborative – have both structured and informal opportunities to meet, connect and learn from each other. All members are recognized as sponsors of the Good Food Awards, receiving passes to the Awards Weekend events and the three annual Good Food Mercantiles. Sustainers and Collaborative members are also invited to be judges at the Good Food Awards Blind Tasting. In June 2019, the Good Food Foundation launched the annual Merchants Alliance Summit – a place to share best practices towards financial, environmental and social sustainability.

In the words of our Chairwoman Danielle Vogel, founder of Glen’s Garden Market in Washington, D.C., together great merchants can “displace demand for industrially produced food and replace it with sustainable, community enhancing alternatives.”
